How to Download Torrents on a Chromebook

Many Chromebook users will want to continue using their Chromebooks for normal things that they did on their Windows of MacOS computers.  A particular area where Chromebooks have lagged behind traditional computers is in their lack of a functional and reliable BitTorrent client. Chrome OS does not support native BitTorrent clients like uTorrent and Vuze for Windows and Mac.

Chrome OS does not support native BitTorrent clients like uTorrent and Vuze for Windows and Mac, but that doesn’t make torrenting impossible. Chromebook userscan still take advantage of the BitTorrent network using one of the four tools we‘ve detailed on this list: Bitport.io, Put.io, JSTorrent, or Bitford.

Chromebook Torrent Apps

The four most popular torrent clients for ChromeOS are Bitport.io, Put.io, JSTorrent, or Bitford. The latter two, JSTorrent and Bitford, are Chrome extensions written in Javascript, meaning they run entirely on your computer and don’t communicate with a server. The best program for downloading torrents on a Chromebook is probably JSTorrent. BitTorrent client apps aren’t the only way to download torrents with a Chromebook, as cloud-based services make torrenting possible without installing any software whatsoever on your device. The way most of these sites work is by facilitating torrent downloads on their servers, as opposed to you directly downloading files locally with apps like Bitford and JSTorrent.

Download Torrent Program for Chromebook

The best torrent program for Chromebook is JSTorrent. JSTorrent is not free, but it is the original and arguably the best BitTorrent client available in the entire Chrome Web Store. JSTorrent is a Chrome extension that actually runs on a Chromebook and not through a web server.  JSTorrent has by far been the leader in the Chrome OS BitTorrent game.

Alternatives, in the meantime, are going to be mostly cloud based. Rather than downloading torrents locally, you’ll add them to an online account which will handle the fancy transfers and then simply stream / download the complete filed directly from that service. There are plenty of these services, but the two that are on my radar right now include:

How to Download Torrents on a Chromebook

Using JSTorrent to download a torrent on Chromebook is easy. Once you find the link to a torrent you want to download, just open JSTorrent and paste it into the search bar. Alternatively, you can download a torrent file directly onto your machine and open it using JSTorrent, which will then begin the download process.

The new and improved JSTorrent is a BitTorrent client for Chrome that downloads torrent files with ease. It can download torrents directly to your Downloads folder and can handle large files (multi-gigabyte files) with ease. It also runs fine on lower end ARM Chromebooks.

Download JSTorrent Lite

JSTorrent Lite features limited functionality and only allows 20 downloads before its free trial expires. It does, however, give you an opportunity to try the app and determine whether or not you want to pay $2.99 for the full version of the product and continue downloading in perpetuity.
